Velvet Elvis : Repainting the Christian Faith review:2 stars (What's all the hype?) - I am about done with "velvet elvis". I give it two stars since it is a good read, but only give it two stars because the author makes it see like what he says is brand new. That he is "repainting" the Christian faith. All you have to do is pick up Philip Yancey (The Jesus I Never Knew, Reaching for the Invisible God, The Bible that Jesus Read, Soul Survivor) who is a much more thoughtful author, or take a sememster at your local seminary and sign up for a hermenuetics class and you will see that what Bell says is nothing new at all. In fact what he says is in the book is the rule of thumb for interpreting scripture... CONTEXT CONTEXT CONTEXT. There you go... nothing new.

So for me, when reading this book, I was thinking, Why all the hype? Nothing I haven't heard before... from some of reviews it seems like this book is an ephiphany. I don't know where you have been going to church, but Rob doesn't hold the corner of truth.

Now, with that said, it doesn't mean I don't appreciate the book. It is good, and insightful... but again... nothing new here.

I liked learning about the women with a hemorrage and the significance of here touching the bottom of the robe of Jesus and that was here proclamation of Jesus being the Messiah. I learned something there. I also liked his take on the superpastor... but again nothing new... nothing that you wouldn't hear at a Promise Keeper Conference.

I disagree at times with Rob on the binding and loosing issue. He does leave the Bible much to open ended for me. But I wouldn't call him a heretic.

I think I understand what he said regarding the Trinity, but he does say it in an awful confusing way. On one hand he says he affirms the trinity, yet on the other hand he seems to say it's OK not believe it. I do agree the term "trinity" is not found in the Bible. The term trinity was used to describe the God-head, that all three persons are of one essence. Scripture is filled with this message (both OT and NT). Rob didn't communicate that, so doubt reigns. I personally can't wrap my arms nor mind around the trinity. Every illustration comes up short to describe it, but that's OK... I believe it and I am in awe at it's mystery.

Same goes for the whole virgin birth. I "think" I know what he saying, but he doesn't communicate it very well. And on such large issues as those... I don't know if I would put it in a book without having it completely clear. By the way, I am a firm believer in the virgin birth.

I do believe in a literal six day creation which it seems like Rob does not. We will agree to disagree. I do agree with Bell that it is a strong leap of logic that some people make saying you have to believe in six-day creation in order to be Christian. That is far more unorthodox than anything the author said in this book. "What must a I do to be saved"... Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ (not on six day creation) and you will be saved." Holding that you must believe in a six day creation to be Christian is the ultimate form of "majoring on the minors."

I don't think Bell is unorthodox... since he does affirm orthodoxy, but he is awful close. It's like reading the book I am thinking what is his motive? Am I reading correctly between he lines? Is he really saying what I THINK he is saying? But at the same time he affirms Orthodoxy... hmmmmm. It is very unclear... hence another reason for the 2 star rating.

I do believe that Rob thinks scripture is inspired, but I don't know if he would see it as inerrant as I do.

I agree with one of the posts that he is much to vague about the starting of his church and the role another very large church had in planting that church. There were plenty of people who knew about the church plant. It just didn't spontaneously combust into 1000 people. I wish he would have given more credit to those that helped in the plant.

So, a lot to disagree with... a lot to agree with. I like the Velvet Elvis metaphor, but drop the repainting bit... because he is doing nothing of the sort.5 stars (revolution through revelation) - This is a fascinating read. Pastor Bell will challenge your established orthodox beliefs while reinforcing your faith in Christ. Pastor Bell may upset many fundamentalists but his revelations are deeply grounded in scripture.

With his extensive and profound insight into Judaism and 1st century Israel, Pastor Bell has restored christianity to it's middle eastern roots.
I was enlightened by Bell's deep understanding of difficult concepts like "binding and loosing", true discipliship and heaven and hell. God has given us the authority to claim truth wherever it is discovered, to include other religions and philosophies.
He really puts christianity in perspective when it comes to following Christ. One thing I learned is that worshipping Jesus and being a disciple of Jesus are 2 very different things. The latter being Christ's true intention. Bell associates the former as being like a "club" who's goal is to gain members while trying to "get" somewhere in the afterlife.

Bell reveals that Christ teaches us that our goal is not to "get" to heaven, it's to "bring" heaven to earth. In contrast, whatever we do that brings Hell to earth is "sin". We are not moving to heaven when we die but God is moving to us. WOW!!
God is so much greater than modern Christianity defines him.
Thank you Pastor Bell for liberating us from the traditions of men and restoring to us the freedom of Christ. God does not fear our questions or condemn our doubts.

This book is worth a second read and in depth study.4 stars (Why wage war?) - I have been a Christian for 2 decades, and until a year ago, when I began to question my faith, did I ever become the Christian and follower I was created to be. Why did I believe what I did? Did I just swallow what everone said and made it concrete? Only when I began to question why and seek for myself and allow the holy spirit to speak to me did I become strong and secure in my faith. This book says, you rarely defend the things you love, you just invite others to see the beauty and enjoy it with you. I will not defend this book to anyone. I just want people to know that it is okay to question, Moses, Abraham, and David questioned. Just seek for yourself, ask God to help you, because when you really seek after him and truth, I promise you will grow closer to him. Read it, read everything. You may find you agree with Bell or you don't, but at least it will be your faith and not someone else's.
