Softek Barcode Recognition:
Any document that is scanned (or faxed) into a computer needs to be indexed against data held on the system. This process can be both time consuming and labour intensive. Most documents that are scanned into a computer were originally printed by a computer and targetted at a particular person or company. If a barcode can be added to the document to identify the addressee, then it can be automatically indexed when it is scanned into the system.
The Softek Barcode Toolkit is a component that extracts the barcode information from an image file (or an image stored in memory). The extracted information can then be cross referenced against a database to automatically index the image.
For example, the "ACME Bookclub" sends order forms to it's customers. Each order form includes a barcode that contains the relevant customer number. When the form is returned to the book club, it is scanned into the system and the Barcode Toolkit is used to read the customer number from the image. When an operator processes the order the customer details are automatically displayed on the screen along with the image.
1. Scan.
2. Read barcode.
3. Read from database.
Note that the toolkit does not perform the scan and does not read from the database - it simply extracts the barcode information from the image.
The toolkit can also be used in a host of other situations. In one application the toolkit was used to read barcodes from petri dishes in a laboratory. The liquid arm was fitted with a camera, which feeds images to a server. When the liquid arm is above a petri dish the image from the camera is scanned for a barcode. The extracted information is cross referenced against a database, which identifies the petri dish and allows the liquid arm to dispense the correct solutions in the appropriate quantities.
